Title: A History of Anthropological Theory, Fifth Edition Pdf
The fifth edition of this bestselling theory text has been revised throughout, with substantial updates, including more on gender and sexuality, and with a new section on Anthropologies of the Digital Age. Keyword definitions have been reinstated in the margins, and biographical information on theorists has been enhanced to build stronger context for readers. On its own or used with the companion volume, Readings for a History of Anthropological Theory, this text provides comprehensive coverage in a flexible and easy-to-use format for teaching in the undergraduate anthropology classroom.
General reader: not for serious research I ordered this work which purports to be a "history of Anthropological theory" and I am deeply disappointed in the book. it is much more of a survey book and it lacks general critical theoretical insight at almost every turn of the page, and at times is at questionable levels of intellectual comprehension. The Boasian perspective of a four field approach is completely missing as the foundation for American Anthropology integrated perspectives between cultural, physical, linguistic and archeological subcategories. Sub-specializations become an extended listing of offshoots from outside reified disciplines: such as "Biologized" Anthropology (p.8). "The long, complex story of Darwinism begins with the Scientific Revolution (p.62)." [and] "A good way to understand Darwin's theory of evolution is to contrast it with Lamarck's theory using the example of the long-necked giraffe (pp 69-70)." [and] "In a way, the Enlightenment was a continuation of the Scientific Revolution because the Enlightenment intellectuals were so enamoured of the philosophy of Newton that they extended it from the natural into the social realm (p.38)." This is a good high school to undergraduate level survey course textbook for an introduction to Anthropology. It could serve as an intro book for a popular general elective for individuals studying in other disciplines. As a general survey reader it works. As an intellectual history it fails. This is not graduate level anthropology let alone a true history of its theory and critical positioning in the history of Western Ideas. I would not recommend this book beyond basic introduction courses...and with that I would have reservations. The author's conclude the work dismissing any authentic historical identity to anthropology and they place a "public" and proto-anthropology in the future streaming of mass media markets and electronic arenas where anthropologists can divest themselves of the "illusions" concerning the history of their field as a "pure" science (p.213-214. "This, however, is a debate best reserved for the professional journals and the classrooms (p.182)."Go Figure....!Did the Job A History of Anthropological Theory is a good general introduction to the subject. I studied Anthropology fifty years ago at UCLA, and bought this text to catch up on the changes in the field. I found it did the job.Great text for anthropology students This text was used in an undergraduate History and Theory of Anthropology course. Of the texts used in the course, this was by far my favorite. It is fairly short, and the writing is clear and concise. It provides a history of anthropology, key individuals, and theoretical movements.Reading this book was great preparation for studying more deeply the theoretical movements in anthropology. Key terms are bolded and provide succinct definitions. These are listed on the left- or right-hand sides when reading, and they are also found in the glossary in the back. Review questions can help students ensure they understood the necessary information. Particularly helpful is the timeline in the beginning, which certainly helped me keep track of the various shifts in anthropological thought.I would highly recommend this text to anyone studying anthropology!
