Title: A History of Anthropological Theory, Fifth Edition Pdf
The fifth edition of this bestselling theory text has been revised throughout, with substantial updates, including more on gender and sexuality, and with a new section on Anthropologies of the Digital Age. Keyword definitions have been reinstated in the margins, and biographical information on theorists has been enhanced to build stronger context for readers. On its own or used with the companion volume, Readings for a History of Anthropological Theory, this text provides comprehensive coverage in a flexible and easy-to-use format for teaching in the undergraduate anthropology classroom.
Excellent Survey I’ve only had an introductory class in anthropology, but I now find myself involved in a project that requires some anthropological knowledge. I’ve read a few works by Durkheim, Mauss, and Levi-Strauss, but I really needed a context for them and for the other works I’ll have to read. That’s where this book is great. It gives a survey of the whole anthropological field in chronological order, showing how one school of thought derived from, or arose in opposition to, another. The cause-and-effect is very logical. What impressed me about the book was its objectivity. I never felt that the authors were lobbying for a particular point of view. Nor was I aware that I was reading a book that had another agenda behind it. This book is well-organized and clearly written, introducing the basic ideas of all the major thinkers in modern Euro-American anthropology. There is also an excellent glossary of terms, a list of discussion topics, and a very valuable bibliography of suggested further reading. I’m sure I’ll be referring to this book often. It’s an excellent reference book. Five stars.Great Overview Excellent overview of the history of anthropological theory. Easy to read, interesting, and comprehensive.Vocabulary terms present some area for disagreement- I would choose to exclude some. It would also be best if, in the next edition, the authors bolded the terms and included definitions throughout. Additionally, the chapter questions do not present themselves to much good discussion.Despite these small annoyances, the text is strong. Highly recommended as background reading for any anthropologist.A good book Needed the book for grad school. It was in good shape and easy to navigate. I like the sidebar notes in this book and the extra definitions. It is great for anyone needing a foundation in anthro.
